SRI RAMA-GHATA AND BALADEVA'S RASA-DANCE




VRAJA-VILASA STAVA, VERSE 94

AkRStA yA kupitA halinA lAGgalAgreNa kRSNA
dhIrA yAntI lavaNa jaladhau kRSNa sambandha hInA
adyApItthaM sakala manujair dRzyate saiva yasmin
bhaktyA vande ‘dbhutam idam aho rAma-ghaTTA pradezam


“I devotedly praise the wonderful place known as Rama Ghata, where Yamuna, who gently flowed towards the salt-water-ocean without having a relationship with Krishna was dragged near by angry Balarama’s plow, and were the river’s crooked course can still be seen by all the people.”
Sri Ananta Dasji’s Stavamrita Kana Vyakhya: Now Sripada Raghunatha praises Sri Rama-ghata, where Sri Baladeva enjoyed the Rasa-dance with His beloved gopis for two months and where He dragged her near with His plough to enjoy in her waters, making her course crooked even now. This pastime is described in Srimad Bhagavata (10.65.17-20, 23-25, 33):

dvau mAsau tatra cAvAtsIn madhuM mAdhavaM eva ca
rAmaH kSapAsu bhagavAn gopInAM ratim Avahan

pUrNa-candra-kalA-mRSTe kaumudI-gandha-vAyunA
yamunopavane reme sevite strI-gaNair vRtaH

varuNa-preSitA devI vAruNI vRkSa-koTarAt
patantI tad vanaM sarvaM sva-gandhenAdhyavAsayat

taM gandhaM madhu-dhArAyA vAyunopahRtaM balaH
AghrAyopagatas tatra lalanAbhiH samaM papau

upagIyamAna-carito vanitAbhir halAyudha
vaneSu vyacarat kSIvo mada-vihvala-locanaH

sragvy eka-kuNDalo matto vaijayantyA ca mAlayA
bibhrat smita-mukhAmbhojaM sveda-prAleya-bhUSitam

sa AjuhAva yamunAM jala-krIDArtham IzvaraH
nijaM vAkyam anAdRtya matta ity ApagAM balaH
anAgatAM halAgreNa kupito vicakarSa ha

adyApi dRzyate rAjan yamunAkRSTa-vartmanA
balasyAnanta-vIryasya vIryaM sUcayatIva hi

“Sri Baladeva came from Dvaraka and stayed in Vraja for two months to console the gopis. During the months of Caitra (March-April) and Vaisakha (April-May) He sported at night with His beloved gopis. The night was illuminated by the rays of the full moon and the southern breezes carried the fragrance of the Kumuda-flowers to the subforest where Balarama was enjoying with the gopis. For the service of Sri Baladeva Varunadeva sent Varuni-devi (a celestial beverage), who trickled from the hollow of a tree and gladdened the forest with her fragrance. The wind distributed this honey-fragrance everywhere and when Baladeva caught that fragrance He went there and drank the Varuni-honeywine with His beloveds.

The gopis, who were intoxicated by the Varuni-wine, sang about Sri Halayudha’s (Balarama’s) sweet pastimes and Balarama, Himself also intoxicated, rambled with them from forest to forest, His eyes rolling of drunkenness. After enjoying the Rasa-dance the intoxicated Sri Baladeva, who was adorned with dewy drops of perspiration, who wore a garland of forest flowers around His neck and one earring on His ears and whose face was decorated with a nectarean slight smile, called Yamuna so that He could enjoy pastimes in her water with His sweethearts. Thinking Baladeva to be drunk, Yamuna ignored His words, so Baladeva angrily dragged her near with the tip of His plough. Sri Suka Muni told Maharaja Pariksit - ‘O King! Even now Yamuna announces Sri Balarama’s glorious prowess, for she is still flowing in a crooked course here!’”

Sripada Raghunatha says: dhIrA yanti lavaNa jaladhau kRSNa sambandha hInA: “Like a dhira nayika (passive heroine) Yamuna flowed towards the saltwater ocean, bereft of a relationship with Krishna.” The purport of this is that the Yamuna that is punished by Baladeva is not the eternal associate of Nandanandana Sri Krsna, but the shadow of the Lord’s Queen Kalindi in Dvaraka, who was one of the wives in the ocean of the Lord’s opulences there. This is written in the Tosani-commentary on Srimad Bhagavata:

devi ceyaM zrI bhagavad rUpAnusAreNa lakSmyA vividha mUrtivat bhagavan mahiSI-vArAyaH zRI kAlindyA eva samjJA chAyA nyAyena tac chAyA vibUti-rUpA bhagavata eva mahA-vibhUteH samudrasya bhArya svarUpA mUrtir ekA jJeya.

Bhakti Ratnakara gives the following description about this event:

ahe zrInivAsa! ei rAmaghATa hoy; ethA rAsa-lIlA kore rohiNI-tanaya
yatha kRSNa priyAsaha koilo rAsa-keli; tathA hoite dura - e rAmera rAsa-sthalI
kohite ki - teGho koTi samudra gabhIra; kRSNera dvitIya deha - parama sudhIra
dvArakA hoite utkaNThAya vraje AilA; caitra vaizAkha dui mAsa sthiti koilA
zrI nanda-yazodA Adi prabodhe sabAre; sakhA-gaNe santoSaye vividha prakAre
nAnA anunaya vijJa rohiNI tanaya; kRSNa priyAgaNe nAnA prakAre zAntvaya
nija priya gopIgaNa manohita kore; ye sab sahita pUrve vasante vihare

“O Srinivasa! This is Ramaghata! Here the son of Rohini danced the Rasa. This Rasa-sthali of Balarama is far away from the place where Sri Krishna played the Rasa with His sweethearts. What can I say? Balarama is as grave as millions of oceans. He is most patient and He is Krishna’s second body. He eagerly came to Vraja from Dvaraka and stayed there for two months - Caitra and Vaisakha, during which He spoke with Sri Nanda and Yasoda and delighted Krishna’s friends in different ways. With different plaintive words the intelligent son of Rohini consoled Krishna’s sweethearts in different ways and then He enchanted His own beloved gopis, with whom He had previously enjoyed in the spring.”

ahe zrInivAsa! zrI rAmera rAsa lIlA; prabhu bhaktagaNa bahu prakAre varnilA
yamunA AkarSi raGge Ane seikhAne; jalakrIDA koilo baladeva priyA sane

“O Srinivasa! The Lord and His devotees have described the Rasa-lila of Balarama in many different ways. Balarama dragged the Yamuna to this spot so that He could play in Her waters here.”

When Sriman Nityananda Prabhu came to Vrndavana in the course of His pilgrimage He stayed at Rama-ghata for a few days, in the ecstasy of Baladeva. Srila Raghunatha says: “I devotedly praise this wonderful Ramaghata.”

kRSNa sambandha hInA yamunA virahe;
lavaNa samudre yAya manda pravAhe
ye yamunAya baladeva kupita hoiyA;
AkarSaNa korechena lAGgalAgra diyA
yAre AkRSTAra nyAya adyApiho loke
yamunAra tIre sei vakra ghATa dekhe
yamunA tIrastha tIrtha ‘rAma-ghATa’ nAma;
bhakti bhare vandi kori ananta praNAma

“Out of separation Yamuna slowly streamed towards the ocean, being bereft of a relationship with Krishna, when Baladeva angrily dragged her towards Himself with the tip of His plough. Even nowadays people can see that the course of Yamuna is crooked here at this Ghata because of this! With great devotion I offer innumerable obeisances unto Rama-Ghata on the bank of Yamuna.”
